SlipStream Web Accelerator is compatible with the following antivirus and firewall applications. Follow the instructions below to configure your security application to work with SlipStream Web Accelerator.
- AVG AntiVirus
- McAfee Internet Security Suite
- Microsoft AntiSpyware
- Norton Internet Security
- PC-Cillin Internet Security
- ZoneAlarm Security Suite
AVG AntiVirus
In order for SlipStream to work correctly with AVG Anti-Virus, SlipStream must be granted access to the internet. The following instructions are for AVG version 7.1.
- Once AVG Anti-Virus is installed, restart the computer and install the SlipStream Web Accelerator.
- Reboot the computer after installation.
- After
reboot, when the SlipStream Web Accelerator connects
to the server for the first time, AVG will prompt
the user about granting the Accelerator Core Services
(Slipstream) access to the internet. Check the box
that says "Save the answer" and select Allow.

Correcting E-mail Scanning
Sometimes SlipStream causes AVG Anti-Virus unable to scan incoming emails. A quick fix would be to stop SlipStream from accelerating email sending/receiving. A better, yet more complicated solution is to configure AVG and your email client without losing SlipStream’s email acceleration functionality.
Quick Fix But Lose Acceleration
This solution restores AVG AntiVirus’s email scanning functionality, but stops SlipStream from accelerating email sending/receiving.
- Click on SlipStream's system tray icon. Go to the "Settings" menu.
- Switch to the "Features" tab.
- Uncheck
the POP3 checkbox.

Configuring AVG and email client without losing acceleration
This solution is lengthier and more complicated than the quick fix described above. However, it ensures that both AVG’s email scanning and SlipStream’s email acceleration will be functional. This solution requires AVG to be enabled whenever you send or receive emails.
- Write down the POP3 and SMTP servers of your email account. Later on you will need them to setup AVG’s email scanner ports.
- You need to set up AVG email scanner so that it uses the same POP3 and SMTP servers as well as the same listening ports as the email client does.
- Open AVG’s control center, click on ‘Email Scanner’ and go to ‘Properties’.
- Select the ‘Personal E-mail Scanner" under Installed Plugins and click on ‘Properties’.
- Click on the ‘Servers’ tab. Delete any ‘automatic’ POP3 or SMTP settings, if there are any.
- Click on ‘Add’.
- Under
‘Server type’, choose POP3 from the
drop-down menu.

- Under
‘Connection’, choose ‘Fixed host’.
Enter the POP3 server from step 1 in the first textbox.

- Take note of the ‘Local port (used in e-mail client)’. Click ‘OK’ to save the settings.
- Set up the SMTP settings by repeating steps iv to vii above with your SMTP server for the email account.
- Now you need to modify the account settings of your email client:
- Set both the POP3 and SMTP servers to "127.0.0.1".
- Set the POP3 and SMTP listening ports to the ones you noted down in step 2
- The
procedure below shows you how to change the mail
servers and their listening ports in Outlook
Express.
- Go to Tools → Accounts.
- Click on the ‘Mail’ tab, select the account whose settings you wish to modify, and then click on ‘Properties’.
- Switch
to the ‘Servers’ tab. Enter 127.0.0.1
for both POP3 and SMTP servers.

- Click
on the ‘Advanced’ tab. Enter the SMTP
and POP3 server ports you noted in Step 2.

McAfee Internet Security Suite
SlipStream Web Accelerator is compatible with McAfee Antivirus versions 8.0 and higher and McAfee Firewall 6.0 and higher.
At installation:
When McAfee Security Suite is installed after SlipStream and email acceleration is enabled, the user will receive a port conflict message (port 110) when SlipStream is first started. It is recommended that McAfee Internet Security Suite be installed prior to SlipStream, in order to reduce conflicts between the two programs. When installed in this order, SlipStream has LSP conflicts with McAfee VirusScan, McAfee Internet Security and McAfee Firewall. As a result, SlipStream email acceleration will not be installed. To allow e-mail acceleration to be installed, McAfee Spam Killer and Privacy Service should not be installed.
- Once McAfee is installed, restart the computer and install the SlipStream Web Accelerator.
- Reboot the computer after installation.
- After
reboot, when the SlipStream Web Accelerator connects
to the server for the first time, McAfee will prompt
the user about granting the SlipStream binary (e.g.
slipcore.exe) access to the internet. Select Grant
Access. SlipStream will then work correctly
with McAfee Internet Security Suite.

Changing Permissions After Installation
- Open the McAfee Security Center by double clicking on the system tray icon.
- Select Personal Firewall from the left hand menu.
- Select
Internet Applications List.

- Find
the SlipStream binary (slipcore.exe by default) and
right click to select Allow Full Access.

MicroSoft AntiSpyware
SlipStream Web Accelerator is compatible with Microsoft AntiSpyware beta 1. It is recommended that SlipStream be installed prior to Microsoft AntiSpyware, in order to reduce conflicts between the two programs.
At installation:
If SlipStream is installed before Microsoft AntiSpyware, there should be no interference between the two installations and Microsoft AntiSpyware should not show any dialogues related to SlipStream. Both programs will be fully functional.
If SlipStream is installed while Microsoft AntiSpyware is enabled, the anti-spyware displays four alerts as SlipStream is being installed.
- First
Microsoft AntiSpyware alert: click on "Allow"
for SlipStream to be added to the Startup folder.

- Second
Microsoft AntiSpyware alert: click on "Allow"
for SlipStream to load successfully at startup.

- Third
Microsoft AntiSpyware alert: click on "Allow"
for SlipStream’s Pop-up blocker to work.

- Fourth
Microsoft AntiSpyware alert: for email and FTP acceleration
to be functional, the LSP added by SlipStream need
to be left as is. You must choose "Ignore"
in this case.

- Restart the computer.
Changing permissions after installation:
If you have blocked any of the above changes SlipStream attempted to make your system, SlipStream will not be fully functional. The only way to fix this problem is to reinstall SlipStream.
- Uninstall SlipStream and restart your computer.
- Install SlipStream following the instructions listed above.
Norton Internet Security
SlipStream Web Accelerator (SlipStream) is tested to be compatible with Norton Antivirus and Norton Personal Firewall versions 2003 (v9) and higher. It is recommended that you install Norton first, and then install the SlipStream. If you have SlipStream already installed, the steps below still apply to the first time SlipStream tries to connect after the NIS installation.
For Norton Internet Security 2006:
Norton will automatically pop out a message similar to the one below:

This means that the firewall is automatically set for you, and SlipStream should now work properly. If it does not, refer to instruction for version 2005 listed below.
For Norton Internet Security 2005:
- Once NIS is installed, restart the computer and install SlipStream.
- Reboot the computer after installation.
- After
reboot, when SlipStream connects to the server for
the first time, NIS will prompt for Internet access.
Choose Always allow
connections from this program on all ports
from the pull-down menu and click OK.

- NIS and SlipStream need to be restarted, so reboot your PC.
- When Windows loads up after reboot, SlipStream and NIS should be enabled.
Changing permissions after installation:
If you have denied SlipStream Web Accelerator (SlipStream) access to the internet, SlipStream will be blocked and will not be able to connect to the server. The solution is to change SlipStream’s permission setting in Norton Internet Security Suite (NIS) by following these steps:
- Click on the NIS system tray icon and select Open Norton Internet Security.
- Click on Norton Internet Security button on the left and highlight Status & Settings.
- Select Personal Firewall and click on the Configure button on the left side.
- Switch to the Programs tab, and locate ‘Accelerator Core Services’ in the list of programs.
- Under
the Internet Access setting, choose Permit
All and click OK.

- You will need to reboot your computer in order to enable acceleration.
PC-Cillin Internet Security
SlipStream Web Accelerator (SlipStream) is compatible with PC-Cillin Internet Security 2002 and higher. PC-Cillin does not show any alerts related to SlipStream. Also, there is no conflict between PC-Cillin’s email scanning and SlipStream’s email acceleration.
ZoneAlarm Security Suite
Slipstream Web Accelerator (SlipStream) is compatible with ZoneAlarm Security Suite versions 4.5, 5.1 and 5.5. Version 5.0 is not compatible with SlipStream. Version 5.1 was released by Zone Labs to improve interoperability with many web applications.
At installation:
For users of the Zone Alarm Security Suite (ZoneAlarm): When SlipStream is installed after ZoneAlarm, email acceleration will not be installed, due to the fact that ZoneAlarm uses an LSP for email anti-virus scanning and IM security. To allow email acceleration to be enabled SlipStream has to be installed before ZoneAlarm. (Note: If SlipStream is installed before ZoneAlarm, anti-virus email scanning and instant message security will not be installed from ZoneAlarm)
The following steps outline the process of configuring Zone Alarm Firewall to allow SlipStream access to the internet:
- Once ZoneAlarm is installed, restart the computer and install SlipStream.
- Reboot the computer after installation.
- After
reboot, when the SlipStream Web Accelerator connects
to the server for the first time, Zone Alarm will
prompt the user about granting the SlipStream binary
(slipcore.exe by default) access to the internet.
Select the Remember this setting checkbox and then
select Allow.

Changing permissions after installation:
If SlipStream was previously denied access to either the internet or trusted zone, SlipStream will become disabled when attempting to browse the internet with a message stating that it could not access the server. In order to allow SlipStream access to the internet after the user has already denied access, please follow these steps:
- Double click on the ZoneAlarm system tray icon.
- Choose Program Control from the left hand menu.
- Select the Programs tab at the top.
- Find ‘Accelerator Core Services’ and left click on icon under ‘Access Internet’ and Select Allow.
- Left click on the red ‘X’ or blue question mark under Access Internet and Select Allow.
